MINI Frozen Black metallic

Highlight in matt: MINI now with exclusive Frozen Black metallic paint finish.

MINI is extending its program of exterior paint finishes for current models to include an exclusive new variant. Frozen Black metallic paint is now available as a limited edition colour for the top of the range MINI Countryman and MINI Paceman models. This innovative paint which has a textured, shimmering matt finish, gives the car a striking and expressive appearance. The new colour and finish is available for the MINI Cooper S Countryman, MINI Cooper SD Countryman, MINI Cooper S Paceman, MINI Cooper SD Paceman, MINI John Cooper Works Countryman and MINI John Cooper Works Paceman.

The Frozen Black metallic paint finish is created using a complex manufacturing process exclusive to the BMW Group. This special painting procedure, which involves not just innovative technology but also a high level of manual craftsmanship, is now being applied for the first time by Austrian production partner Magna Steyr in Graz where the MINI Paceman and MINI Countryman are produced. The special surface treatment encompasses the base layer for grip and corrosion protection, the colour layer as well as the clear lacquer finish which has added silicates to create the matted impression as well as the velvet effect which can be seen and felt.

Attached exterior parts such as the model-specific front and rear aprons and the exterior mirror caps are finished separately in the paint finish Frozen Black metallic. Due to the labour intensive process used to apply this exclusive body colour during production it is limited to a restricted number of cars.

Frozen Black metallic is of the same high quality as the other paint finishes available for MINI in terms of abrasion resistance and colour fidelity. The finish is completely weather resistant and car wash resistant, however hand washing does require special care as spot cleaning of the surface using wax or polish can leave an unwanted gloss effect. For this reason the BMW Group offers care products developed specially for treating the Frozen Black metallic paint finish.

MINI driver assist systems.

The new MINI driver assist systems.

Intelligent networking between the MINI, the driver and the outside world create new ways to enhance driving pleasure, extend the range of comfort functions and provide the latest services in the area of in-car infotainment. Since its launch, MINI Connected has been marketing leading in the area of in-car technology, pioneering access to apps and services to both assist and entertain driver and passengers.

In future models MINI will roll out a number of innovative driver assist systems that also use intelligent networking for the exchange of information between driver and vehicle.  The new functions transform the MINI more than ever into its driver's assistant and offer innovative comfort and safety technology.

When it comes to the development and configuration of new driver assist systems, MINI exploits the BMW Groups' worldwide leadership in innovation in this area. Networking technology has been used for the targeted exchange of information between driver, vehicle and the outside world for more than 40 years. Innovations like the radar-based distance warning device (1972), the world's first on-board computer with exterior temperature display (1980), the first navigation system fully integrated in the vehicle from a European manufacturer (1994) and first Emergency Call system, still unique to this day, first introduced in 1997, are among the milestones set by the company in this area. As early as 2007, interface technology for integrating the Apple iPhone in the MINI operating system was introduced. Since 2011, additional online-based functions can be integrated in the MINI Connected package with the help of apps.

The MINI head-up display helps the driver concentrate on what is happening on the road by displaying relevant information right in the driver's line of vision.  This can be seen quickly and conveniently without having to take your eyes off the road. The collision warning and pedestrian warning systems, including city braking function make it easier to avoid dangerous situations, particularly in city traffic. The MINI parking assist feature offers maximum comfort in searching for and using parking spaces, while the reversing camera gives drivers a better view when manoeuvring.

Other innovations in the driver assist systems for MINI include the video-based speed and distance control which automatically keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front, and the speed limit information system, which detects and displays speed limits as they apply to the current section of road. This system is supplemented by the no passing display and traffic sign memory functions. The digital headlight assist function contributes to optimum visual conditions when driving at night. This system helps the driver use the full range of headlight functions. Oncoming traffic and preceding vehicles are registered by a camera, while automatic switching to dimmed headlights avoids causing a nuisance for other drivers.

The Bulldog is back

The Bulldog is back – the new MINI is coming

The production of the new MINI starts at Plant Oxford, England,  in just a few weeks time and will be unveiled at the brand's home on 18 November 2013. The launch campaign kicks off at the same time, once again centred around elaborately produced TV commercials. Tongue-in-cheek stories showcase the unique driving fun offered by the brand as well as the powerful emotional bond established between drivers and their MINI. A familiar co-star will appear alongside the brand new MINI: the English bulldog, Spike.

With the market launch campaign for the new MINI, the British small car manufacturer continues the tradition of unconventional and humorous appearances across a range of communication channels. The new TV commercial was developed by creative agency BSSP in San Fransisco and implemented by MINI brand communications and the Hamburg-based film production company Sterntag. It conveys individuality a passion for driving fun, innovative technology and a sense of quirkiness which only MINI can offer.

On his first trip in the new MINI, bulldog Spike gets to know and appreciate all the main strengths of the newest member of the British small car family. And since the little guys always have to stick together, whatever the species, Spike is also called upon to defend MINI against the advances of an enormous Great Dane. In spite of being sceptical initially, he becomes fond of his master's new MINI by the end of the first test drive and proceeds to show it the way only he knows how.

Shot with various endings and broadcast in different lengths, the commercial was filmed at a Hollywood studio and in the streets of downtown Los Angeles. Every single shot was meticulously rehearsed over a period of four days with the huge logistical effort typical of Hollywood productions. With over 120 crew members, MINI also enlisted the help of a special team of dog experts. In addition to wranglers and supervisors, there was a vet and even a make-up artist to ensure the four-legged hero was always in good shape and perfectly presented.

MINI and the English Bulldog are old friends: an English bulldog appeared in the recent MINI brand campaign featuring the claim "NOT NORMAL". What is more, the MINI Collection would not be complete without the bulldog: the cuddly version of the animal is one of the most popular MINI lifestyle products. As well as being featured on cushions, there are USB sticks, key rings and smartphone covers featuring the iconic bulldog.

The official unveiling of the new MINI takes place on 18 November 2013 - the 107th birthday of Sir Alec Issigonis, who started a revolution in automobile manufacturing with the first ever model over 50 years ago. The world premiere will be held simultaneously in the British capital of London and at the MINI Plant in Oxford, where the new model is produced. The new MINI then sees its motor show premiere in the same week, with virtually simultaneous presentations in Los Angeles, California, and Tokyo, Japan. In addition it will also be officially presented in Shanghai, PR China. The new MINI will be launched worldwide in the first quarter of 2014.
